Set in a post-socialist Hungarian village, Satantango depicts the struggles of villagers living in a dilapidated community suffering from relentless rain. Through drunkenness, adultery, and voyeurism, the novel explores the alienation of human nature. The book is structured like the steps of a tango dance, with six chapters in chronological order mirrored by six in reverse, creating a circular labyrinth through voyeuristic records from a doctor's perspective and fragmented narratives. Two conmen manipulate the villagers with false promises of migration. The narrative is permeated with a sense of dampness, cruelty, and despair, while Krasznahorkai's complex, lava-like sentences flow throughout.
