The novel tells the story of Baron Wenckheim, who returns to his Hungarian hometown from exile in Argentina, burdened by gambling debts. The townspeople mistakenly believe he has returned with immense wealth, sparking a farcical drama of rumors and political scams. Upon his return at age 65, the Baron faces his ancestral estate, now a ruin swallowed by mud and neglect. He attempts to restore order but becomes entangled in absurd power games with the remaining servants. Meanwhile, a moss scientist living on the outskirts of town tries to shield himself from external chaos through mental resilience training, but ultimately, disaster befalls all the residents.
