Overview:

The independent design and construction of shields in China started in 1953 and gradually improved from 1978 to 2017. Some remarkable achievements have been made since 2017.

Shield technology in China has developed rapidly since President Xi Jinping proposed a transition from "made in China" to "created in China", "Chinese speed" to "Chinese quality" and "Chinese products" to "Chinese brands" when he visited China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co Ltd, an industrial shield center of China Railway Group Ltd, on May 10, 2014.

China currently has the most shield tunnels, in terms of both quantity and total length, the most shield projects, and the most rapidly developing shield construction industry of any country in the world.
