Third books of China-Cambodia Translation Program launched

The third books of the China-Cambodia Translation Program were launched at the 29th Beijing International Book Fair on June 15.

The program's latest books are House with a Thatched Roof by Cao Wenxuan, China's first Hans Christian Andersen Award winner, and Story of the Wallet, an example of children's literature in Cambodia.

The former depicts Sangsang's six years of primary school life, while the latter is a collection of seven novels about Cambodia's current social situation.

Fan Ming, director of the Publishing and Global Business Department at Phoenix Publishing & Media Inc, discussed PPMG's participation in the China-Cambodia Translation Program and the achievements the group has made from the program.

Deng Shubi, Chinese translator of the Story of the Wallet and professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, interpreted the language and content of the Cambodian book from the perspective of a translator.

She said that the book depicts the lives of children in contemporary Cambodia and their positive traits, including integrity and kindness.

Dai Zhigang who is in charge of the Khmer Press House from China, shared the reason why Khmer Press House chose House with a Thatched Roof, saying that the novel features characters and regions with Chinese characteristics and universal values such as kinship and friendship.

He added that the novel has received many national awards and has been published in other countries, which also contributed to his decision to choose it.

Dai said he hopes China and Cambodia remain friends.

Gu Jiayun, deputy dean of the School of Asian and African Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University, sent his congratulations and shared the social background, characters and touching conversations of Story of the Wallet via video.

The two books' authors and Zhang Mingzhou, former chairman of the International Board on Books for Young People, also expressed their congratulations via video.

Cao talked about the key word "uniqueness" in his literary creation. All of his works feature unique Chinese countryside scenery, daily life, language expressions and narrative methods, and House with a Thatched Roof not only shows traditional Chinese culture, but also mobilizes children to pursue the beautiful things in life.

Zhang praised the China-Cambodia Translation Program books as a golden bridge of literature and friendship to enhance mutual understanding between children from the two countries, improving the countries' relations from generation to generation.
