English version of The Village Has Changed.
The English version of The Village Has Changed made its debut at the 2024 London Book Fair in the United Kingdom on March 12 (local time).
The title is an original picture book with the theme of natural preservation published by Phoenix Juvenile and Children's Publishing in 2023, with the English version published by the British New Classic Press.
The book tells the story of the Yucun village in Zhejiang province, the birthplace of the concept that "green waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets".
Yucun is surrounded by green hills and vast bamboo forests, with a stream running through. In the 1970s and 1980s, the village opened mines and cement factories, leading to increased prosperity but a deteriorating natural environment.
In 2005, the concept of "green waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" pointed Yucun residents in a new direction. Guided by this latest development philosophy, they repaired roads, cleaned rivers, and protected bamboo forests, gradually restoring greenery to Yucun. This "idyllic destination" was honored as one of the first "Best Tourist Villages" by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 2021.
Starting from a child's growth story, The Village Has Changed narrates Yucun's beautiful transformation, showcasing positive practices such as green development and rural revitalization. It embodies China's advanced ecological civilization concept as well as outstanding national and contemporary spirits. The English version is expected to allow more readers worldwide to witness the beauty and transformation of China through Yucun's story.
"This extraordinary English version of the book brings us entertainment and inspiration and provides us with education and enlightenment," said Tony Caplin, consultant of the New Classic Press. He emphasized the importance of children understanding successful environmental restoration stories.
Translator Helen Wang delivers a speech at the launch ceremony.
Renowned translator Helen Wang also shared her translation experience. As a translator, while considering the intentions of the author and illustrator, she also values the reading expectations of the audience.
