PPMG shoulders social responsibility in 2024

Phoenix Publishing & Media Group (PPMG) in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, has always prioritized the mission of becoming an internationally renowned publishing and media giant. The group has been committed to expanding development space, enhancing competitiveness, promoting high-quality development, and contributing to the development of a culturally strong province with practical actions and tangible results.

PPMG operates a diverse array of sectors, including publishing, distribution, printing, periodicals, hotels, real estate, trade, and financial investment. With two main-board listed companies—Phoenix Media and Phoenix Ltd, PPMG oversees more than 150 subsidiaries and employs over 10,000 people. It owns nine publishing houses, 24 journals, and one metropolitan newspaper, publishing an average of 6,000 new books annually. Its mass publishing ranks among the highest in the domestic publishing industry, and it is the second-largest publisher of primary and secondary school textbooks in China. PPMG has been featured among the National Top 30 Cultural Enterprises 16 times in a row and ranked among the Global Top 50 Publishers for four consecutive years, emerging as the leading Chinese publishing enterprise.

1. Exploring a new realm in content creation

PPMG has excelled in thematic publishing, planning nearly 100 topics for the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The group has also advanced the publication of major projects such as The Jiangsu Library, the 100-volume Special Studies on the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression series, and the Overseas China Studies series, with The Jiangsu Library having published 1,549 volumes.

PPMG has vigorously implemented four major original projects in literature, academia, popular science, and education. It has actively promoted the development of publishing brands, introducing 26 sub-brands during Beijing International Book Fair. In 2024, one of the group's books was listed in the Chinese Books of the Year, while 12 made the monthly list. Twenty-one projects were included in the second supplement of the national 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) for publishing, 15 projects received funding from the National Publishing Fund, six projects were granted special funds for the collating and publishing of ancient books, and eight books were listed among the Most Beautiful Books in China, with its total number of awards being among the most of any local publishing group.

PPMG has seen steady progress in educational publishing. It has actively built a comprehensive educational publishing ecosystem and continuously advanced the development of a high-quality educational publishing system with nine sets of 122 new edition textbooks receiving approval from the Ministry of Education. The group has also collected feedback from educators on training and educational research activities, enhancing the pertinence and effectiveness of its educational publishing.

PPMG has accelerated integrated publishing. The Phoenix Book application has deepened its cooperation with audio platforms such as Himalaya and Tencent, with the number of users exceeding 1.31 million. The Phoenix e-Study has continued to promote new AI educational applications and the pilot and procurement of intelligent homework systems. The Phoenix Vocational Education Cloud platform has amassed over 2.5 million users, and the Jiangsu Digital Rural Bookstores has served more than 7.48 million people with 100 million visits.

The group has improved the construction and market application promotion of digital textbooks, completing the development of 22 varieties throughout the year. It has strengthened the empowerment of new AI technologies, advanced the development of the book resource library platform and the chat.ppm AI Platform, continuously improving the functionality of its basic service platforms.

2. Enhancing the efficiency of cultural services

In response to the multi-level cultural demands of the people, PPMG has updated urban cultural spaces and expanded cultural service channels. The Suzhou Guanqian Bookstore has completed its upgrade and renovation, with a total construction area exceeding 7,600 square meters. The Wuxi Book Center was selected as the annual Most Beautiful Bookstore at the Third National Reading Conference. Throughout the year, PPMG hosted 460 cultural marketing events, fully leveraging the role of Phoenix Plaza as the "cultural living room" of various regions, and the number of members significantly increased to 310,000.

PPMG successfully organized the 14th Jiangsu Book Fair and 2024 Library Collection Book Fair, which brought together more than 400 publishing and distribution businesses and over 80,000 types of publications from across the country, with a total of 176 various activities organized. It also held the Library Collection Book Fair in spring and autumn and the second Nanjing Literary Book Market, further enhancing its brand influence and recognition among readers. Throughout the year, the group has conducted more than 5,500 reading promotion activities, comprehensively promoting reading nationwide.

3. Contribute to international cultural communication

PPMG has published the first batch of books of the Mutual Translation Projects for Asian Classics and released 14 books in 22 overseas editions under the Jiangsu: Literature and Scholars Translated series. PPMG has also deepened international collaborations, with the Chinese and English versions of the World Canals Series (6 vol.) launched in Poland and the mutual translation project for contemporary Italian and Chinese poetry collections successfully initiated.

PPMG has also strengthened exchanges with countries such as France, Hungary, and Chile. The group hosted the Reading China with Phoenix—Renowned Jiangsu Writers and Literature Salon in France and Hungary. It has established 18 overseas Phoenix Bookshelves and participated in more than 10 international book fairs, including the London Book Fair and the Bologna Book Fair. The group has also created a sub-brand of the Phoenix International Chinese Workshop, launching a series of textbooks in Uzbekistan and co-establishing the Indonesian Zheng He College (Semarang).

4. Demonstrating new initiatives as mainstream media

PPMG has achieved significant impact with thematic reports including the red-crowned crane named California, China's Solutions in the eyes of foreigners, and Symbols of Jiangsu. With the goal of telling China's stories through culture, the group has successfully organized the opening ceremony of the Civilization Encounter: Jiangsu Week of Chinese Folk Music and the thematic exhibition of The Grand Canal Meets the Rhine River, garnering over 32 million readers. Additionally, events such as the Jiangsu Cultural Lecture Series in 13 Cities, Changzhou Key Cultural Brand Festival, and Jiangsu Youth Calligraphy Competition were well-received, achieving a balance between social and economic benefits.

5. Actively participating in rural revitalization

In 2024, PPMG dispatched two staff members to join the provincial rural revitalization task force in Xiangshui county, Yancheng, donating 1 million yuan ($136,844 million) and books worth 100,000 yuan. It also organized two teaching and learning sessions and visited 16 households in poverty.

To support educational development, PPMG donated cash, books, and educational supplies to primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the province, with an annual donation of 20 million yuan. Efforts in paired assistance were also advanced. The group donated books to libraries and schools in Xizang autonomous region and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the command of Jiangsu helping Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture promote the high-quality development of cultural and educational initiatives in the prefecture. Throughout the year, over 100 donation events were held under the Phoenix Youth Bookshelf public welfare project, donating 65,277 books and 10,000 electronic reading products, providing aid to 40 Hope Schools in the province and benefiting 5,000 youths in need.

6. Implementing green development principles, demonstrating new responsibilities in environmental protection

PPMG has strengthened the supervision and testing of green printing textbooks, rigorously verifying the green printing qualifications of contracted enterprises and enforcing mandatory green printing inspections before the release of national unified textbooks. Phoenix Xinhua Printing Group has implemented centralized water supply and photovoltaic power generation projects, leading to cleaner production processes and significant energy savings. Xinguanglian Technology Ltd, an investment enterprise of PPMG, has cumulatively owned or serviced distributed photovoltaic power stations with a total installed capacity of 10 MW, capable of producing approximately 11 million kilowatt-hour of green electricity annually, which saved 4,400 metric tons of standard coal and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 5,225 tons, thereby contributing to the national dual-carbon goals.
