Yilin Press, a subsidiary of Phoenix Publishing and Media Group, has long been dedicated to foreign literature, focusing on key foreign authors and works.

Many foreign literary works from minor language countries such as Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic have been introduced, making direct translations from the source language possible to minimize the impact of intermediary translations.

Here are some such works, many of which have been introduced for the first time.

Confessions of a Citizen.

Hungarian

Due to the unique historical background and his insistence on writing in the solitary Hungarian language, the works of Marai Sandor were only rediscovered in the 21st century. The German literary criticism circles compare him to Stefan Zweig, while other critics place him alongside Thomas Mann, Musil, and Kafka.

Yilin has published works like Embers, Disguised as a Monologue of Love, and the trilogy Confessions of a Citizen, among others. These are the first-ever direct translations from Hungarian into Chinese, led by the renowned translator Yu Zemin. In the conversion from Hungarian to Chinese, the poetic purity of the original language is maintained. Yu has been awarded the "Hungarian Cultural Contribution Award" by the Hungarian government and is hailed as the "Chinese voice of contemporary Hungarian literature".

Bartis Attila is one of the most creative writers in contemporary Hungarian literature, known as "Milan Kundera's successor". His work, Tranquility, has placed him among Europe's outstanding writers. Against the backdrop of the great changes in Eastern Europe, Bartis examines the individual destinies of several generations under a microscope, revealing the cruelty of grand history and the fate of ordinary individuals amidst the storms of the era.

Laszlo Krasznahorkai is one of the most important contemporary Hungarian writers. He has formed a deep cross-border friendship with Yu Zemin. His works, especially The Baron Returns and Herscht 07769, will soon be published by Yilin Press, still being directly translated by Yu Zemin.

The Pear Field.

Yilin Press published The Pear Field, a work shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize, written by the Georgian writer and director Nana Ekvtimishvili. Georgian sinologist Ana Goguadze translates the book.

The Pear Field has received acclaim for its unique narrative style and profound insights into human nature and marginalized social groups, attracting attention from readers and critics alike. Through a tragic yet empowering story of female strength, the author immerses readers in a world where darkness and hope coexist, violence and warmth intertwine. With a calm and delicate touch, the author presents the cruelty in forgotten corners and the radiance of women striving forward even amidst cruelty.
