The prestigious 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Awards were announced at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy, marking a historic moment for Chinese illustrator Cai Gao, who became the first Chinese illustrator to win the award since its inception. British author Michael Rosen was also honored.
Often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of children's literature", the Hans Christian Andersen Award was established by the International Board on Books for Young People in 1956 and is awarded biennially. It recognizes authors and illustrators whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children's literature.

British author Michael Rosen.
Rosen, a familiar yet enigmatic figure to Chinese readers, gained internet fame through his expressive "Nice" meme, which originated in a storytelling video. However, many are unaware of his illustrious career as a children's book author.
The award committee praised Rosen for his extraordinary ability to engage with children through honest, humorous and respectful language. With over 200 books to his name, including the well-loved picture books We're Going on a Bear Hunt, and Chocolate Cake, Rosen combines humor with emotional depth.
Rosen's works reveal his poetic prowess, characterized by rhythmic and playful language. Known for his captivating storytelling, he brings his tales to life with theatrical flair. His stories, often rooted in real-life experiences, blend realism with fantasy, offering sincerity, nuanced emotions and profound life wisdom. Like a rich chocolate cake, Rosen's storytelling is layered and memorable, leaving readers with a lasting impression.
Yilin Press published his fairy tale novel, The Incredible Adventures of Gaston Le Dog, in 2025. This year, Yilin is set to release another work, Fantastic Mr Dahl.
