Founded in 1988, Yilin Press is a pre-eminent Chinese publisher known for world literature, humanities and social sciences, popular science, language education and original Chinese writing. Over the past four decades, Yilin has built a strong reputation for introducing outstanding works from around the world to Chinese readers while developing a distinctive list of contemporary Chinese literature.

Yilin publishes more than 500 new titles each year, and its publications have received major national honors including the China Publishing Government Award, the China Outstanding Publication Award, the Five-One Project Award and repeated selections for China Good Books. Alongside introducing outstanding writing from around the world to Chinese readers, including works by winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Booker Prize, Yilin also works closely with leading contemporary Chinese writers across generations. Ge Fei, whose Jiangnan Trilogy won the ninth Mao Dun Literature Prize, has published major works with Yilin including Look Forward to Spring Breeze and Mounting the Terrace in Spring. Lu Min is a recipient of the Lu Xun Literature Prize, while Ye Zhaoyan has received major national literary honors for his fiction and has published a series of important works on Nanjing with Yilin. A Yi, one of the most distinctive voices of his generation, has received several literary awards and has been translated into many languages. In 2023, Liu Liangcheng's Bomba, published by Yilin, won the 11th Mao Dun Literature Prize, China's highest honor for literature.

Science fiction and fantasy have formed a unique highlight of Yilin's contemporary list. Through its Yilin Fantasy series, the press publishes both international science fiction and a growing body of original Chinese speculative writing. A story by Jiang Bo in the Yilin anthology Visiting the Stars: A Journey Through Chinese Sci-Fi and Space Exploration won Best Short Story at the 34th China Galaxy Science Fiction Award, one of China's leading honors for science fiction. Yilin has brought Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem into a new visual form through its graphic-novel adaptation, which has attracted international publishing partners across multiple markets.

International publishing and cultural exchange have long been central to Yilin's mission. Yilin maintains partnerships with publishers and rights agencies around the world and actively promotes Chinese books to international readers through translation and copyright cooperation. Yilin has repeatedly been recognized among China's leading publishers for the overseas library presence of its titles and has been designated a National Key Cultural Export Enterprise for consecutive years since 2015.
